5-4-22 Item VI(b) Staff Report

“The 3,150-acre Poe Ranch straddles the Ventura-Los Angeles County line in the Santa Susana
Mountains in the northeast corner of Simi Valley. Protection of the ranch would tie together the
6,000-acre Newhall Ranch open space dedication, the Mountains Recreation and Conservation
Authority’s 12,000-acre Rocky Peak Park-Antonovich Regional Park at Joughin Ranch complex,
and Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District’s 1,000-acre Marr Ranch open space.
The 6,668-acre Big Sky Ranch spans 6,668 acres across the southern face of the Santa Susana
Mountains above Simi Valley. The ranch connects to Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District
properties in Alamos, Dry, and Tapo Canyons and Ventura County-owned Happy Camp Canyon
Regional Park. It is also part of the South Coast Missing Linkage that connects the range across
the 118 freeway to the Arroyo Simi, the Santa Susana Pass, and the Simi Hills.
The acquisition of Poe Ranch and Big Sky Ranch together presents an opportunity to protect
approximately 15,000 acres and tie 30,000 acres of existing open space into a contiguous
45,000-acre of open space.”
